Rash Vows Can Lead To Tragedy
Judg. 11:32-37; Matt. 5:33-37
Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, and said, “If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.” …When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, there was his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. This tragic oath came about because it was open-ended “whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace”. Unfortunately it was his daughter. There is some debate as to whether Jephthah actually sacrificed his daughter as a burnt offering or simply kept her single like a nun all her days. Rash and open-ended vows can land us in trouble. Believers must make specific vows within their future reach and must make every effort to fulfill them on time. In Matthew 5:33-37 Jesus Christ condemns making vows or taking oaths casually, giving your word while you know you won’t keep it. The biblical principle is that promises made to God must be fulfilled even at great cost.
POINT OF EMPHASIS: Believers must make specific vows within their future reach and must make every effort to fulfill them on time.
PRAYER POINT: Lord Jesus bring to my memory all the vows I have made and the grace to fulfill them in the name of Jesus.
