Offences Will Come

Matt. 18:6-9

In all societies, there is a formal system of laws. There are also enforcement institutions such as the police, the courts and prisons or reformatories as the case may be. This is because it has become accepted that the tendency to do what is wrong is inherent in man, particularly man in his Adamic nature. No society approves of wrong doing, but wrongs are common. Our Lord Jesus says “For offences must come, but woe to the man by whom the offence comes” (Matt. 18:7). We must do all we can to avoid causing breaches to the rights of others as believers. Breaches occasion frictions to peaceful human and societal relationship. It is wrong to cause a child, or any other person for that matter, to sin. Jesus warns us against offences and commands us to address and remove the root cause of sins. Offences may be crimes against the society or wrongs against individuals. An umbrella word for both in the Scripture is sin or unrighteousness. Sin, otherwise known as wickedness, does not go unpunished (Prov. 11:21). In law, it is trite that where there is a wrong, there must be a remedy (ubi jus, ubi meridium)  To avoid the unpalatable consequences of offences, we must steer clear of causing offences. Wickedness attracts punishment, be warned!

Point of Emphasis: Avoid causing offenses, do only what is right.

Prayer Point: Lord, give me grace to avoid wrong doing.
