The Believer Adopted As Son
Rom. 8:12-17
Before the believer gave his life to Christ, he was an enemy of God – rebelled against God, disobeyed His commands and probably persecuted children of God. The death of Jesus on the cross is the sacrifice that abolished the enmity between the believer and God, reconciling man to God. It goes beyond reconciliation, God takes the believer as His adopted child – “as many as received Him (Jesus), to them He gave right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (Jn. 1:12). The believer is given all the rights a child of God is entitled to; the Holy Spirit is given as a seal guaranteeing the adoption. In view of the privileges given the believer, he should not give room for the flesh to still control his life, rather he should yield fully to the control of the Holy Spirit. Since the believer no longer belongs to the world, he may be subjected to some persecution by the people who are fully committed to the world system.
Point of Emphasis: Only those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
Prayer Point: I receive the right as a child of God to live a victorious life over the flesh.
