Understand the Facts

Gen. 13:1-13

In a previous devotional reading, it has been maintained that disputes are inevitable, but they should be resolved. In finding correct answers, we must first fully understand the facts surrounding the disputes. This is crucial to conflict resolution. The herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock often strove or fought. Why? Both had become rich in possessions – flocks, herds and tents. Their possessions had grown so great that they could no longer coexist peacefully. The land was no longer able to support both of them, hence the quarrels. It would appear that Abram understood the facts and he proposed a solution: “Please, let there be no strife between you and me and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brethren. Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right, or if you go to the right, then I will go to the left” (Gen. 13:8-9). When you fully understand the facts or variables at play, you will be able to proffer reasonable and acceptable solutions to the issues at stake. Before you resort to pointing accusing fingers at your neighbour, take time to understand the facts. In civil litigation, facts form the bedrock for the application of evidence and law. Therefore, seek to know what the facts are if you want to resolve or settle any dispute.

Point of Emphasis: Facts are sacrosanct, you cannot manufacture them.

Prayer Point: Lord, give me patience to distil facts from opinions and assumptions in my effort to settle any dispute.
