Rend Your Hearts, Not Your Garments
Joel 2:12-17
When a person’s misdeed is exposed there is always the expression of regret. The expression can be superficial, not coming from the heart. Several things are done so that the offender can be accepted back into the good books of the offended – giving apology; presenting gifts; becoming more polite. When it is sin against God, the person becomes more active in religious activities, gives bigger offerings and pays church dues regularly; etc. Outward show of repentance is of little value to God because it is often the consequence of regretting that one is found out, rather than an expression that one judges one’s action to be wrong. God is more interested in the inward expression of repentance. On the level of a community, the repentance should involve everyone, and sometimes accompanied with fasting.
POINT OF EMPHASIS: Rend your heart and not your garments; return to the Lord your God.
PRAYER POINT: Father, grant us Your mercy as we look unto You in repentance.
