The Principle Of Respect
Rom. 12:9-11
There is a popular saying that “respect is reciprocal.” There must be mutual respect and honour among people in interpersonal relationship, to strengthen the bond of the relationship. In a situation where respect or honour is one-sided, the equation cannot be balanced. As believers, the Bible-based principle is that in the matter of honour or respect, you should prefer the other person. The word “preferring” in verse 10 means going before, leading, setting an example. Thus in showing mutual respect and honour, you are to strive to excel; not to see who could obtain most honour, but who could confer most, or manifest most respect. Thus you are to be studious to show to each other all the respect which is due in the various relations of life: children to show proper respect to parents, parents to children, servants to their masters, etc. This is different from the standard of the world which seeks not to confer honour, but to obtain it; which aims not to diffuse respect, but to attract all others to give honour to it. If this principle of mutual respect is obeyed in interpersonal relationship, it would put an end to envy, unhealthy ambition, heart-burning, and dissatisfaction. It would produce contentment, harmony, love, and order in the relationship.
Point of Emphasis: Respecting or honouring others does not reduce you, it can only increase you.
Prayer Point: Lord, help me to always give honour and respect to all that I relate with, whether old or young.
